CASE STUDY: ACCESS TO VISION CARE

Scaling Equitable Eye Health Access for Students Nationwide

For many students, something as simple as needing glasses can quietly stand in the way of learning, confidence, and opportunity. That’s why 20/20 Onsite’s Vision Health mission is focused on expanding equitable access to eye care, starting where it matters most: schools.

Through our school-based vision program, we bring comprehensive eye exams and prescription eyewear directly to students in our hometown of Boston and throughout the United States. By partnering with trusted brands, we eliminate barriers such as transportation, scheduling conflicts, and limited access to optometrists, ensuring every child can see clearly in and out of the classroom.

This case study showcases our continued commitment in 2025, highlighting a school event in Orlando where we expanded our reach to new regions. The event, made possible through community collaboration and philanthropic support, demonstrated how mobile, school-based eye care can effectively and sustainably close health equity gaps.

THE CHALLENGE

Vision problems are one of the most common yet often overlooked obstacles to student success. Many families face barriers to obtaining routine eye exams, often due to a lack of access, inadequate awareness, or unaffordability.

To scale our impact, 20/20 Onsite set out to validate that our mobile care model could successfully serve new communities and deliver measurable, meaningful results for students and families.

20/20 ONSITE SOLUTION

20/20 Onsite deployed its Mobile Vision Clinic to the Orlando school campus, bringing clinical-grade diagnostic technology and certified optometric staff directly to students.  Each child received:

  • A comprehensive eye exam conducted remotely by ophthalmic technicians and licensed optometrists
  • Access to prescription eyewear, selected and provided through our partnership with Warby Parker
  • Clear, easy-to-understand results and follow-up guidance shared with families and school staff

RESULTS

HIGH NEED IDENTIFIED

Nearly 70% of students examined required glasses, compared to a typical average of just 20–40%. This finding highlights a significant unmet need for eye care within this community.

EARLY DETECTION, REAL IMPACT

10% of students were referred for additional care, with follow-up provided for potential concerns. Each child is now receiving eyewear and appropriate care. This is a direct example of how early detection can change lives.

COMMUNITY EXCITEMENT

The response from staff, parents, and students was overwhelmingly positive. Teachers reported that the mobile clinic sparked excitement and conversation around vision health—transforming what could be a routine exam into a memorable learning experience.

MODEL FOR EXPANSION

This event offered further validation that 20/20 Onsite’s school-based model is scalable. This model can be replicated in other districts and states to improve vision access for thousands more students.

FINAL ASSESSMENT

The Orlando school event confirmed what our team has seen time and again: when we bring vision care directly to students, we don’t just correct sight, we unlock potential.

As we expand our Schools Program, we’re actively seeking funding partners, community collaborators, and school districts that share our commitment to ensuring every child has access to the care they deserve.

Together, we can help more students see clearly and thrive.
